A Numerical Study and Simulation of a Heat Exchanger Packed with Phase Change Materials for Air Conditioning System in a Residential Building Located in the Desert Region of Iran

Abstract

Air quality inside the residential buildings has become a major challenge due to the climatic change and increasing the living standards. The increased cooling demand results a peak in electrical power consumption during the hottest summer hours. Phase Change Materials (PCMs) used in Thermal Energy Storage (TES) systems, can be a proper solution to control the room temperature and maintain the comfort conditions. In the present study by solving a mathematical model, performance of latent heat thermal energy storage has been simulated for free cooling application of a hypothetical residential apartment located in the desert region of Iran. Moreover, for better evaluation of the proposed system, the absorbed excess heat has been compared with the energy consumption of the passive coolant system. The results have shown that the excess heat absorbed by the PCM is triple the energy consumption of the passive coolant system. One of the advantages of the proposed method is that, 70 percent of the passive coolant power consumption takes place during the off peak midnights.
